Nestled in the heart of rural West Otago, Waikoikoi School has proudly served its community since 1880. As a contributing primary school, we provide a supportive, close-knit environment where students thrive both academically and socially.
Our school is located in the heart of the Waikoikoi District, a unique area defined by the meeting point of three streams Waikoikoi Creek, Glenshee Stream, and Valley Stream. This natural convergence has helped shape both the landscape and the identity of our community.
The meaning of the name Waikoikoi has evolved over time. In recent years, it has come to be widely interpreted as “cool cool water,” though earlier generations believed it meant “clear clear water.” Interestingly, the word koi does not appear in the Māori language. Repetition often conveys deeper or symbolic meaning rather than simply doubling a word. While the exact origin of the name may remain uncertain, it reflects the richness of our local heritage and the deep connection between the people and the land.
We are proud to be part of this legacy, a school rooted in history, shaped by its environment, and strengthened by its community.
