Waikoikoi School is a Decile 8 contributing (Year 0 – 6) country school situated 20 minutes from Gore and 10 minutes from Tapanui.

Waikoikoi is a small country school which nurtures and supports students during their developmental years. We have unique qualities which only a small country school can provide; academic excellence with strong personal values and committed community support. As a school we are very proud and protective of our "uniqueness".

We work hard to ensure that all students are catered for and focused on learning to the best of their ability, socially, academically, personally and culturally. Our students do extremely well at interschool sports events and go on to achieve well at Blue Mountain College and university.

Students are immersed in an environment that places a high emphasis on becoming the best they can be, valuing themselves, valuing other people, using initiative, and developing high order thinking skills.

Waikoikoi School also ensures that its students are prepared for the 21st century, keeping abreast of innovations in education and adapting so that our students become intelligent young adults with high personal values.

At Waikoikoi School we base every decision, every course of action on what will make a difference for the students at our school. We keep the most important thing, the learning and personal development of the students of Waikoikoi School the most important thing.

We have 2 full time teacher’s with 2 classrooms NE- Year 3 and Year 4-Year 6.We fully fund things that are really important, like extra staffing in the mornings to ensure that students receive the best literacy and numeracy learning possible. We monitor student's progress closely, especially when they start school, so that if a child is not achieving at the expected level, we intervene quickly.

We look forward to being a part of your child's education.

“Students benefit from high quality teaching.  Teachers believe that all students can achieve and they work hard to ensure that this happens.  They organise daily programmes so that students receive concentrated teaching in literacy and mathematics.  Students show high levels of enthusiasm for and engagement in their learning.”

“Parents, students and the board are well consulted and informed.  The board is very committed to ensuring the planned direction of the school is implemented”.

“The very caring relationships throughout the school strongly support students’ learning and well-being.  Students told ERO that they enjoy their teachers and that their teachers listen carefully to them and value their ideas and efforts.  Students feel safe at school. They relate well with each other and support each other’s learning.  Older students look out for younger students.  The school has an open-door policy and students, their families and visitors are made to feel welcome.”

“Students show high levels of interest and motivation in their learning.  Most students know why they are learning and why it is important.  Teachers and students use class time well.  Students take pride in their work and presentation skills are of a very good quality.  The teachers know their students well and make learning interesting.  They target their teaching to the needs and abilities of individual and small groups of students.”

“Teachers believe that all students can achieve and work to ensure that this happens. They set and share high expectations for learning.  Through skilful questioning, they challenge students to think more deeply.”

“ERO observed students enjoying writing and saw examples of high quality work.  All students benefit from a strong focus on spelling skills.”

The teachers have a passion for drama, dance, visual art and music and provide rich learning experiences for students in these areas. Students benefit from:

  • Explicit teaching of different art media, arts language and music notation;
  • Meaningful integration of technology; and
  • Well-planned integration of the arts into other learning areas.
